Being a member of the football chain gang, also known as the down marker crew, requires paying attention to the action on the field, making quick decisions, being able to quickly move markers, working as part of a team, and providing accurate measurements of the distance and down for the game officials and players to use. The goal is to ensure that the markers are placed correctly and quickly in order for the game to proceed without delay. The total time commitment is to arrive 1 hr prior to kickoff and can leave after the game ends.
Game day setup requires loading and hauling the game day trailer to all home and away games. The responsibilities include setting up the field prior to the game and breaking down the field after the game. The total time commitment is to arrive 2 hrs prior to kickoff and after the trailer is unloaded back at the school.

Duties include handing footballs to the officials, running onto the playing surface to bring back the kicking tee, and retrieving any wayward punts, field goals, or point-after kicks. They also ensure that the game balls are in good condition and keep track of which balls are in use. There are 2-3 ball boys/girls during one game. Time commitment is about 40 min prior to the kickoff to till the game ends.
